Earning by Demonstrating

G

I am an international student,I have been told that I can support my stipend with additional money I earn with some lab teaching in the university and it is well paid. Does anybody have an idea how much is "well paid"?

Pay for lab teaching does vary but will probably be between 10 and 20 pounds per hour. The number of hours available for each PhD student can end up being very low, as everybody wants the extra income, you may only get a few hours work per term. If you are going to rely on this money, then ask what the average number of hours is (and for a rough idea of the rate of pay).

G

Thank you I really don't have to absolutely depend on that income though it will be definatefly useful for something's extra and besides I enjoy teaching.

I did some teaching for the uni and my head of department insisted on my behalf that I should be paid the same rate as would a guest lecturer, which is £25 an hour. Not sure if I would have dared ask for that much if he hadn't been backing me up but it might be worth a try.

G

Did you have a special case that meant you got the backing for that much or was it a question of if you don't ask you don't get? Ie. being bold does work!

G

My biggest selling point was that if I didn't do it one of the lecturers would have to(since I'm the only PhD student) which would mean taking time away from their research work which brings money into the department. Of course, if there are other students you all need to make a stand together. I was lucky in having the support of my boss, but as he says there is no reason why you should get paid less than what they would pay a guest lecturer just cause your one of their students.

G

That's great and good to know! Out of interest what uni are you at? They pay very well and your supervisor sounds cool!

I'm at the University of Paisley. Before the PhD I worked in employment law and it always surprises me the things universities get away with (even unintentionally) when it comes to employing students. A lot of it comes down to you being assertive for your rights. Like I said though my uni have been very good to me.
