Lots of misfournate event and terrible people towards Chinese people. My relatives lives in US got a good job after graduation. Lots of local Born chinese still experience 'hate crime' from local nazist uk people. I have been attacked by different racial people in Uk. I'm glad God send his holy spirit to protect me.

I'm lone parent Phd student. Lots of Lots of problems, negative response and unhelpful towards lone-parent in higher education. Does anyone agree?

Where are you based? In all honesty, I have never come across racism towards Chinese students (not within the university scene anyway). However, I'm sure it happens.

Just because you can't get a good job after graduation in the UK is nothing to do with racism - it's just economics.

I don't think many people will take that comment very seriously; it is not balanced, you give no context and is potentially offensive, which is ironic. This is certainly a forum to share problems and concerns with the postgraduate system, and you'll certainly find a lot of people who post here as a source of help and advice. Perhaps we can start this conversation again?

Not totally agree, I done my research in primary, secondary and disable study for chinese adult. They always suffered from slience.

we all are biased against one thing or another. From your post it seems things have been rough for you. It is very natural to be less optimistic in such situations, and when we are less optimistic, we have less energy and in that state we find it easier to see what is wrong with others.

I am sure there are biased people everywhere, biased because of skin color, biased because of religion, biased because of status, biased because of personal attractiveness, biased because of superior cognitive abilities etc etc etc

but trust me there are more nice people than biased.

I am studying in mid-west US, which can be sterotyped as a conservative place. I am a foreign student. when I landed on chicago airport the immigration officer was EXTREMELY rude to me, then another officer passed a very condescening remark at the security line, i couldnt figure out was it because i am a woman, or because i am an Asian woman....

anyway i did not pay much attention to these two indivduals, though for a moment i felt really angry but then i said no it is just my first day in US, i have to give this place a better chance, i will not base my impression on those two individuals' attitude. and then there were at least three airport officials who showed extremely courteous behavior towards me on the same day.

so lot of time people are not biased because they have certain race, religion or gender, they are just being human beings with average judgment and sense.

my point is that focus on people who are nice and generous, and more often you will see they outweigh the other kind. and also those people who come across as racist, or biased to you, are actually with that way with everyone for one reason or another, they just have attitude issues, so do not take their attitude personally.

I get really fed up with all these posts about "racist uk" - what an offence to us normal people! Puccagrannie, define "hate crime"; were you chased through the streets by a gang of armed youths; relentlessly targetted for verbal and physical abuse by other ethnic groups? I'm sure there is no crime at all in China, a wonderful utopia, certainly no persecution of Asian ethnic minorities or non-state authorised Christians (which coincidently could be defined as racism). I am English and African; yes you meet the odd muppet who forgets to engage brain before speaking but we all do it occassionally. So kindly stop tarring everyone with the same offensive brush.

In response to you difficulties as a lone parent student, then yes I agree, the system is biassed against lone-parent and indeed "mature" students. You are hard pushed for time, trapped by commitments in your local area so unable to readily move, ineligible for "student discounts" as you are too old, etc. I heartily sympathise; stick with it though. (up)

Another anecdote:-
When I, a recently married white woman in my twenties, travelled (on my honeymoon) to another 'Western' country, I had quite a horrible experience that could be characterized 'racist' but I opted not to interpret it in this binary way.
Basically I was walking through the streets and a man of another race was trying to get me to buy his CDs, I said 'no thankyou' - my standard response in this country out of politeness. He then proceeded to shout at me/ follow me down the street 'looking at this Nazi woman expletive expletive expletive. I kept walking, pretty intimidated.
This guy was trying to hijack doctrines of racial self-determination to intimidate me. He wasn't being racist though, he was just one idiot in a very big world.

Not being funny, but do you always come across this friendly? Calling an entire country racist, Nazi demons is hardly the way to endear yourself and integrate, is it?

Would it help if I reminded you of the human rights abuses in China? Perhaps of the continued harassment and imprisonment of Shi Weihan? Lots of racist, nazi demons live in China too. Your relatives got a job in the US after graduation - if employment is a problem, why don't you go to the US and get a job? If you are so unhappy here, why don't you move elsewhere?

As you have faith, perhaps you need to be reminded of Jesus' commandment - love one another as I have loved you. I suggest calling random people Nazis and demons may not be what Jesus meant.

I feel sorry for her experience. I think she's from Hong Kong or other mixed race european asian countries. Some countries are more promote multiracialism so possibly will be less problem especially after world war II. In my church there are problem of 'mixed race' marriage but mostly from external pressure. Sometimes also to do with class and parental background which affect their misconception towards other race.The problem is to do with 'poverty', 'asbodo' and 'hate crime'. Anyone study 'Anthropology' will understand this kind of problem. Lots of problem in the world, not only in uk this tiny island. this is part of their culture. Or the right term is 'Nationalism' rather than 'nazism'. This cannot be denied that some part town, street, house, defferent type of people of this country is less tolerate with other race. Unfortunately this country is full of contradiction politic. 'Deal with it' or ''Live with it' cause u can change them. Only God can change them. Pray For U and other religion and human right countries. Bless. (International Church).

What does her post achieve though? It's just a torrent of abuse at the UK interspersed with a bit of rubbing her religion in everyone's faces (which she *is* free to do, but having lived in the UK for ten years should know is generally rather frowned upon and thus probably won't make her many friends).

If she has a problem, I'm sure people would be happy to help, it's just she'll get on better if she:

a) Doesn't insult people;
b) Specifies what precisely the problem is.

but strangely when i read her/his post , i dont get the impression that she is blaming the entire UK. I think she just perceives herself to be a victim of racism against chinese by "some" people in UK....



maybe she is upset about her experience, and just wants to voice it, .......and maybe she has done so in not very articulate manner...



but the good thing that she can see from replies to her post is that none of us support any racism and all of us are trying to tell her to be more objective in her assessment of a situ

Being an Irish Catholic, I have been abused on a few occasions in this country (England). It was quite annoying and at first it infuriated me. However, when I thought about it,  I realised that many English people get racially abused in Ireland. I have also lived in New Zealand and Australia and I have encountered racists (though not abusing me) there too. My point is that there are racist idiots in every country, race, creed and any other way in which you can subdivide the human race. The best way to deal with it is just to let the idiots be idiots and focus on the good people, because the world is full of good people and I have been fortunate enough to meet them in each of the aforementioned countries and from all races and creeds.

Long live diversity and multi-culturalism!
