Are Full-Time Masters students exempt from paying Council Tax if they live in their own/shared accommodation?

Or would you be exempt from Council Tax if you only live in Halls (University owned)?

If you are a fulltime student be it BSc, MSc or PhD you are exempt from council tax.. You usually just need to get a letter from your uni confirming you are a student to give to the local council

however, if you share a house/flat with non-students, the house/flat is non-exempt and usually your flatmates would expect you to pay your share of the council-tax. because the amount of the council tax is the same, no matter how many students/non-students live there.
legally, they can't force you to - but in practice, they just won't accept student flatmates who aren't prepared to pay their share of council tax.

However, if you live with one other person who is working and would normally receive a 25% single person discount if they lived on their own, then if you move in as a student they are still entitled to the discount as you are not eligible to pay council tax. Therefore, it would be quite unfair for them to ask you to pay a share of it.

If you lived with 3 other people, all of whom are working, you could argue that they should split the cost between them.
