Funding in second year

D

Can you apply for funding in your second year of your PhD and turn it into four if you don't get funding the first time round?

D

I'm a UK student in the UK.

C

You can submit two PhD finding aps' to the AHRC. Any funding beyond three years you have to apply for again...

I am curently sending off my second and final application! Argh!

D

Yeah so i can get that in my second year for 3 years even if i'm registered on a programme. In addition, could I do 1 year of a phd and then apply for department funding for the other years?

A

With the AHRC at least, if you apply in your second year (for your third year) they'll only give you one year's funding. It's not for three years from the date when you apply.

D

Is there more chance in the second year then?

D

with research councils?

N

Usually after some months of research you might be able to improve the definition of your research topic and in this regard that can make your application stronger when applying for research councils funding.

C

I hope so!

D

So have you already started your PhD

C

Yes, I am four/five months in...

D

So can I ask what you are applying to - sorry all these questions!
