Is it possible to get on a PhD with a 2ii + an MSc? I know most state a 2i but are my grades equivalent? I bummed out on my 2nd year of my BSc but worked my ass off in my 3rd year but just missed out on that magic 2i! Is it worth putting this on my application?

I suggest you approach the department of the university you are interested in and ask them. It depends on the subject you are doing. I`ve been trying for a year to get in for a self-funded PhD in Psychology with a 2:2 and MSc, but have had little success. Perhaps you should try a small university as the major universities tend to admit mainly foreign students with few places available. I`ve approached a university that has recently acquired university status, and it seems quite hopeful that I will get a place.

That is the golden question indeed!! I've got the same as you and have been trying for various things! It's always a awkward question when they ask what you got for your BSc but the 2(ii) doesn't appear to be that much of a problem as I originally thought as long as you show that you are committed and willing to do it! Except that unfortunately competiton is very fierce so hang in there!! But then again I'm an eternal optimist!!

What field are you interested in? Your chances might vary depending on what area you are interested as there are more opportunities/funding in certain areas than others particularly anything to do with biomedical science! But I've been told the 2(ii) wasn't too much of a problem so you should definitely go for it!

I've got a 2(ii) and MSc and I didnt have any trouble getting interviews and even bagged myself a PhD offer! start next week!

If you can show you have the relevant experience and commitiment it shouldn't be too much of a problem! But competition is very fierce so your MA may prove to be a sticking point but as long as you can show it's relevant! It also depends on what branch of science you are interested in as it would be very useful if you went into industry afterwards!

I got a 2:2 , did an Mres (masters by research) and have just started a phd. So if you have an MSc then i dont think there will be a problem. Again the competition is very tough! Just send out lots of applications to what you are interesed in.

I got a 2:2, but was lucky enough to get PhD funding from the MoD. I'm now a Senior Lecturer (New University) - though I do my best to keep my "bad degree" secret. It's not quite true that "YOU MUST HAVE A 2:2 TO DO A PhD" but there is an element of truth in it. A 2:2 will haunt you like a guilty conscience in academic life - so get a 2:1 if ever you can! If not - then an academic career is still possible but be ready for a rough ride!

Sorry - re-reading my last post it seems unduly bleak - it wasn't meant to be. I just know from experience that some academics are prejudiced against applicants with 2:2's. Certainly taking a taught MSc would improve your chances, or better still a stint working in industry.

I'd agree with Somebody's assessment. I have a 2:2 which I don't like mentioning either. I did an MSc which was at the other end of the spectrum to my BSc degree! Found it a struggle to find a PhD in the field of my MSc. However it can be done, given the right contacts, determination and some luck! I got onto my PhD by undertaking voluntary work experience as I was often told I didn’t have enough experience of the subject. My supervisor there gave me an excellent reference which impressed my current supervisor!
