HELP!! How can I transfer my PhD to another Unviersity?

G

Hi,

I'm a year into my PhD and would like to transfer to another University. I'm finding my supervisor inadequate and unhelpful, having only seen me for a total of 2 hours in the last year. I'm not sure how to go about this!? I'm worried that it will sound, to a prospective supervisor, that I'm giving up or causing trouble. How is a University transfer looked upon by academic staff? I don't want to put my current Uni in a bad light, but I just know I won't progress in this situation.

My friend faced the same situ at uni of soton chemistry dept and they didnt let her change........funding restrictions, her supervior was never there too and she went for a Mphil instead but try your luck where is your uni?

You don't mention what your PhD is in or the type of program you are in. But there are schools that will take earned PhD credits. I am interested in doing the same thing and have spoken to two recruiters with whom I was honest and upfront. Both have been able to address the issues I am having at my current school.

Having you tried discussing your lack of supervision with the postgraduate team or research degrees committee at your current Uni? The Uni has a duty to ensure that you have adequate supervision and you should certainly talk to somebody ASAP if you haven't already. Good luck.

Opps, typo, 'Having' should read 'Have'.

Hi, thanks for all your advice everyone. I don't want to name any names, but I'm studying Archaeology and was offered a scholarship to go to Italy. I'd happily replace the funding for some proper guidance now though! My current Uni are no help at all, so I think I'll have to change...

Does anyone know how it would work out for a transfer to another European Uni? Is it the same cerdit system everywhere? Thanks again :)

if u have only seen your supervisor for 2 hours in a whole year -then it is really ur responsibility to have done something before hand...in terms of supervision.

dont you have a supervisory team? talk with the head of research/research director for your dep. or someone who is responsible for your PhD. research?
