Help please: EndNote question

4

I have some entries where the author is a company or government department. I use the abbreviation first and put the full name in brackets next to it. For example:

DCMS (Department for Culture Media and Sport) (2006). "Museums and Galleries" [online] Available at: . [Accessed 14 December, 2006]

When citing from this source, I would like EndNote to put (DCMS, 2006) only. Is it possible to make EndNote ignore the brackets as a rule when citing, but keep it in the bibliography? Because there are so many situations like this, I don't want to manually edit (and word doesn't let me edit these citations once inserted).

Hi 404, I think the only solution to this problem is to create a new "reference type" (Endnote has 3 unused ones). Select which fields you would use and what you want to call them (normally just the field name). So for example, Author would be the acronym (DCMS), then year would be year, use secondary author for the full name and the rest would be normal.

To do this, you need to go to the EDIT menu, preferences, Reference Types (down the left)>click on modify reference types>at the top for reference type, scroll down and select unused1 and off you go.

Once you have done this and saved, go to the edit menu again >output styles>edit Harvard

Under bibliography select templates, select reference types at the stop and select the new one you just made. You can copy and paste the one you have been using but after author, put the field secondary author (or whatever you called it).

Hope this makes sense??

Thanks H. It makes sense. I tried a similar thing with the existing reference. But when I change the template, it affects the citing too, so I get two authors on citing too.

oh I actually get it now... ok, cool. Thanks

confused again... I can see the newly created Reference Type (from one of the unused ones)in the preferences, with the new name I gave. But how do I make it visible in the New Reference's "Reference Type" list?

H

It should automatically be there, as soon as you create it!

weird... it doesn't appear there.

Hi H. I forgot to say it worked after my last message.

It was my fault, I wasn't putting the field names, assuming they would show up by default. Now everything is working, your plan saved me hours worth of work.

H

yay!

I've very much into automating as much as possible! Saves time!
