Is a PhD in IR fit for working for international organizations?

S

Hi all,

I just got a Master in IR from the London School of Economics with distinction, and one of my professor suggested that I start a PhD there, with her as a supervisor. I had never really thought about doing a PhD beforehand, but the fact that my prof believes in my capacities made me seriously consider this opportunity.
I know that I don't want to work in academia, and I 'm not even interested in working for a think tank, but I would be extremely happy working for the UN or any other international organization such as the EU.
So my question is: is a PhD in IR the good path towards working for an international organization?
Thank you so much for your answers and good luck to you all!

You don't need an IR PhD to work for those organisations, it won't be held against you but it won't be a particular advantage. Honestly given your career goals, unless you are offered a full scholarship and really want to spend 3-4 years working on a specific topic, I would say no.
