labs

G

does n e 1 hate working in labs. My supervisor said that she would like me to be in labs...I dont know if u want to spend my time there. ARGH I HAVENT EVEN STARTED YET AND I WANT TO SCREAM.

G

Where else did you expect to research for three years??? in the canteen?

G

What kind of a post is this? I think someone might be taking the proverbial!

G

Why would u hate labs? You must be insane? If you hate it that much then talk to your supervisor about it. There must be a good reason she wants you there.

G

nah i thought it would be flexible so i could go into labs once or twice a week. Its jst that I work best from home.

G

Well- what is your field?

G

good advice german

G

I didn'y give any advice, anon english. If you are doing a PhD in biology, physics, chemistry it would be expected from a student to be in the lab from 9-5 every day. On the other hand if you are doing a PhD in social sciences you might be able to work from home several days a week.

G

Thats not even advice!!! thats just stating the obvious!!

G

If you hate the labs so much, then you are gonna love the next three years!!! enjoy

G

Well observed, Stu. Lalal, what is your field ?

G

well i am in the compsci department but its actually sociology...dont ask! but its not programming and its perfectly possible to do it from home/library/n e where...i just thought it would be flexible. work best from home.

G

I know you said don't ask, but can I ask what your project is? Sorry!

G

How about some flexibility yourself? You seem to think that the department is gonnna give you a PhD for doing just what suits you. You need to do research, that requires you to do whatever it takes to find answers to questions to which no answers have ever been given before. Labs are bound to be part of the work to find those answers. Be more flexible, next you will be moaning that the work is too repetitive, well PhDs are repetitive and in most cases tedious, but thats research for you

G

At the end of the day I am as passionate about my research as the next person, I have written my first paper as an undergrad, I have done a lot for someone in my age and position. I don't mind working in labs but I know from my work etc how and where I work best.
