Leggings - a good or bad idea?

D

I bought myself some yesterday to wear with skirts and long tops. But now not so certain they're a good idea. And can I wear them with trainers, or just with flip flops?

What do you think?

S

Being one who appreciates female fashion, the advice from down here in London is that girls wearing leggings under denim skirts is a frequent sight on Oxford Street. Personally, I think the look would be better without the leggings, but I would say that wouldn't I?

S

DanB, you're thinking of leg warmers (like the ones they used to wear in Fame).

Very 80s indeed. I remember wearing them when I was a kid. I think leggings can be hideous if worn on their own like trousers. But the 3-quarter length ones look nice under skirts and dresses with a cute pair of trainers.

S

Yes, you're right. I do remember my first ever grilfriend (when I was at school) having a fetching pair of white leggings. Midn you, she had a great legs so the look worked. I wonder what she's up to these days?

Leggings look good on sexy girls. FACT. For about 10 years, however, they have been exclusive to big fat mingers, on which they look positively awful. I am glad to see the fly honeys claiming them back. In order for me to tell you whether they would look good, you would have to advise me as to which category you fit into.

DJW - THEY ARE A WARDROBE ESSENTIAL

I purchased a pair of black leggings from The giant Top Shop in Oxford Circus ( known as ToSo in my social circle) in approximately March of last year. I found myself sending a text to by 3 best mates immediately after saying something along the lies of " I never thought I'd say this buy I have just bought a pair of leggins", which was met with derision and disbelief.
All I can say is I have had my monies worth 100x over from them. Great under skirts & dresses with pumps and chunky flat boots & I for one will be wearing them through the winter with jumper dress and knee high heeled boots.

P

Ed I would like to commend you for your use of the term "fly honey".

For a second, I thought Ed was Stu

Leggings update: DJW I took up the research mantle and have been out into Oxford Street this lunchtime to observe. Leggings are indeed very popular. Black is the most common but I've seen white, brown and, erm, leopardskin leggings. Some are 3/4 length, some are knee length. They can be worn under skirts, under shorts, under long tops or, in one case, on their own (although she was a fine looking girl).
More fashion advice from TRY VESSEL tomorrow.

My rule is you should never wear a fashion craze if you're old enough it have worn it the first time around

that's so true SixKitten. (so true? Am I becoming one of those people on reality TV programmes? How can something be so true?)

Thanks for the fashion advice everyone. I am currently wearing my new 3/4 length black leggings under a long top which goes down to mid thighs. Hope I've got it right!

Leggings under shorts???

I agree Mia, I had the very same thought when puffball skirts reappeared (and actually, I thought that they were ridiculously unflattering and didn't wear one the first time around aged 11!).

My days of leggings, puffball skirts, baseball boots with dayglo quiggles on (plus matching swatch watch and those stringy dayglo bracelets) all with a hair scarf are well and truly over
