Life after a PhD? Do you need qualifications to lecture

G

Hi Guys, I was wondering whether you can go into University or College lecturing straight after doing a PhD, or do you need to take a particular qualification to do this? If so, what is the qualification called and where can it be attained? Thanks.

G

Hello, AFAIK the usual route to becoming a lecturer is to do your PhD, then do a couple of Post-doc jobs and aim to publish as much as you can! You usually need a good publication record to be considered for a junior lecturer/lecturer position. Meanwhile, any teaching experience you can get will stand you in good stead. I'm not aware of any particular qualification required for teaching but most Unis will run internal teaching courses for new or less experienced lecturers.

Thanks Ann...I wasn't sure if there was an equivalent of the UK PGCE or PGCert to teach at universities.

The internal teaching course I think Ann's talking about is the PGCHET (postgraduate certificate in higher education teaching?) New lecturers 'have' to do this course or they don't get a permanent contract (but I get the impression this isn't very strict)
