London travelcards

G

I am due to start my PHD at the end of the month. Although it's with the Sheffield University , I'll be in London for the vast majority of the time - most of the books I need are in the British Library. Seeing as Sheffield isn't in London, is there any way at all I can get a student travelcard? Seems very unfair if I am ineligible just because of an acident of circumstance. No, I won't be a UoL student, but I'll still be a student in London with just as many money problems!

G

I'm doing a PhD in coventry but live in London and I wasn't able to get a London student travel card I'm afraid its only for students attending colleges within the M25.

G

You can get a reduction on ordinary travelcards if you have a railcard that is available to students. I didn't know there were travelcards specifically for London students. I wanted to be a stay in London to be a student but I've got a PhD in the Midlands so come down to London at the weekends. It's costing a fortune!

G

I forgot to mention that the reduction for travelcards through railcards is only if available if you buy an all zones travelcard.

G

Please could I get more info on the student travelcards? What if you are registered as a student with a research institution in London but uni is not based in London? Many thanks.

G

Ooh , that thing about the railcard is interesting, X. If you're registered at a research institute in London, they may have the magic forms. Its worth asking...

G

Maybe I should ask the people at the Institute for Historical Research...

G

if you are a full-time student, you qualify for a ytoung persons railcard, even if youre over 26. You just need it stamped by your institution. ask at the train station.

G

Cheers Zelda, I'm gettng a young person's railcard, it's just the London underground thing that's the bugger
