losing motivation

G

i have only been doing this for a month now and am struggling to maintain enthusiasm. I am very lonely as I am the only person int he lab. I go through the day with no-one to speak to and its hard. The other students in groups are cliquey and no first years starting so I have no one else who can relate. My supervisor is very busy and I don't feel this something he can do much about anyway. is there anyone else gone through this who can give me some advise on it.

I sympathise with you as I also work for small group and have been the only student for most of my PhD. However, I am lucky and have a great working relationship with my supervisor so haven't felt the isolation that you're experiencing. There's no instant solution but I would encourage you to try to interact with students from other groups, it's early days and you could find some good friends. Mention to your supervisor that you are feeling isolated, he may have some ideas and it's best to keep him informed. Good luck!

There are three reasons cause of which we lose motivation:
Lack of confidence, lack of focus and lack of direction. To get over the situation you are in all you need to do is boost your confidence. Now, how you gonna do it? Make a mental list of your strengths, past successes, and current advantages. We tend to take our strengths for granted and dwell on our failures. By making an effort to feel grateful, you’ll realize how competent and successful you already are. This will rejuvenate your confidence and get you motivated to build on your current success. It might sound strange that repeating things you already know can improve your mindset, but it’s amazingly effective. The mind distorts reality to confirm what it wants to believe. The more negatively you think, the more examples your mind will discover to confirm that belief. When you truly believe that you deserve success, your mind will generate ways to achieve it. The best way to bring success to yourself is to genuinely desire to create value for the rest of the world.

The original posts are from nine years ago, Oortiz. Hopefully the situation has evolved since then!

It would be a very long PhD process if it was still ongoing full time hahahaha. :-) I wonder what Sadsack is doing now...
