Low results in 2nd year.

G

In my 2nd year of a degree course I had a family crisis and due to this, I missed lessons and I got very low results for that year - most subjects ended up being equal to a third.

But in my final year which was problem free, I worked very hard and managed to get a 2.1.

I was wondering would the low results recieved in my 2nd year give me a problem when applying for PhD courses. Or would most judge me on what I received in my final year.

I also had low results in my second year due to a lot that was happening but managed to get a 2.1. I have a PhD offer but i only got one after doing my masters. All the unis i applied to in my third year rejected me- the harsh reality is that the world is not interested in why you did not do well in second year. so i'd say. try, if it doesn't work. take a masters course and try again.

Hi Shell,

Depending on the uni you apply to you may not have to reveal your second year results. Some applications require a transcript of your results (this will include all the results you have achieved during your degree) others just ask for a copy of your certificate (which only has your final classification). Don't let low second year results stop you from applying, good luck.

I applied and was offered many PhD projects and NO ONE asked for my second year results..all they needed to know were my class of degree and any experience. You will be fine.

Thank you for the replies, :) I will definately start applying for PhDs.

Shell - you can always explain about your problems in your second year. Your improved marks in the final year clearly indicate that there was a major problem in your second year. I was in a similar situation and this worked for me. Everyone has problems at some stage in life.
