I graduated with a 1st in Biomedical Sciences in 2001. After doing office work I'd now like a career in research. But I can't decide whether to do a Masters or PhD. I don't have much lab experience, which is why a Masters may be the best option to start with, but a PhD would be a better qualification to have. But I'm not sure I'd get a good PhD with my lack of experience. Or I could try to get a lab technician job? Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Do a masters or MRES (master of research) It will do you no harm at all, and the MRES will give you a taste of research life, afterwards it will only help you to get the perfect PHD studentship

Hi Becky, if you want a career in research then it would probably be better to do a research degree (Mphil or PhD) rather than a taught MSc. It's certainly worth considering getting a lab tech job first, that's what I did after completing my first degree and I'm now a PhD student within the same research group. It was a good way of getting some research experience first. Best of luck!
