Hello, I'm currently studying a Masters Degree in Politics. I have discovered a PhD studentship in what can be academically described as a mixture of English Literature and Film Studies. The writer under study is related to the nation that I specialise in and further my degree also covers the cultural aspects of that nation as expressed through literature and film.

My question is, is it at all common for a person with a social science Masters to advance to a humanities PhD?

BTW, my undergraduate joint-honours was Politics and Drama with was deemed to be a BA.

I can't say that it is all common for a switch from social science to Humanities PhD.

What I can say is that it is possible; I have also switched fields :-) .

Your social science background will help you to adapt quickly to your new "environment" (this is my experience because I did a minor in Sociology and it helped me a lot--especially to understand theories and lots of other stuff I previously would have fallen asleep reading!!).

I think that there is a general trend in academia now to celebrate inter-disciplinarity and multi-disciplinarity. That is certainly the case in my humanities area which combines theory and methodologies from many disparate areas.
So I really think you should go for it and stress the value that you can bring with your interest in the particular cultural perspective.
