Dear Sir,
Thank you for taking the time to respond to my request.
I am student in Mexico and I`m currently researching research paradigms.
My task is to write a research question for each of the following paradigms.
1. Positivism.
2. Interpretivism.
3. Constructionism.
4. Critical Research.
An area of educational research that interests me is Social and Emotional Learning.
I know that there is a lot of research on SEL in primary schools but not high schools.
The “school" I will be researching consists of students of low socio-economic background.
My understanding of the research paradigms is good (I think) but I wanted to know if I was on the right lines.
Positivist Research Question:
What effect does social and emotional learning have on students`attitudes towards learning?
Why? Attitude effects behaviour.
This kind of research is measurable.
I would observe and question a group of students at the beginning of the year (with little SEL).
Then I would re-observe and re-question the same group of students at the end of the year (with lots of SEL).
I would then compare and contrast the data collected.
This will prove or disprove my hypotheses that SEL does have positive effects.
Interpretivist Research Question:
Are students more likely to enter higher education because of/exposure to Social and Emotional Learning?
Why? Meaning is constructed by individuals and their environment.
This will be an exploratory research.
Not measurable but about people`s unique experiences.
The goal is to understand better what`s going on.
I would conduct interviews and ethnography with individual students.
Does this make sense according to each paradigm?
Any feedback would be most welcome.
THANK YOU,
