hi everyone.,
I'm really confused between 2 offers to do my PhD in law and I have scholarship suitable for both..
1- from Warwick university by research in 3 years minim .. I heard a positive news about my supervisor ,
2- from Leeds university by new route 4 years as you can see in link
http://www.law.leeds.ac.uk/prospective-students/research-postgraduates/integrated-new-route-phd/
the first years would be almost A master course but my dissertation would chapter from my final thesis , some people advice to take it because:
1- it would make the PhD easy for you since you did not do my master in English . it would make me practice writing before starting my PhD.
2- there is a chance to change your proposal after finishing the first year.
3- I will get a new master degree and PhD as well.
On the other hand ..Some people said you can attend any lecture you want as PhD student without hassling yourself with the stress of master.
Could you please advise me??? and if your were me what are you going to do..
Many thanks..
Do you already have an LLM or specialist knowledge in your chosen research subject beyond undergraduate studies? If so, the Leeds programme probably wouldn't worth it.
Generally, Warwick has a better name for law research.
Dear missspacey..
thank you for your reply.. i have a master degree from my country in comparative jurisprudence and i do it in my language ..so I'm not familiar with the law language..moreover I'm going to study international business law which I have not studied before in my previous study.. so it's kind of new thing to me..
i like warwick name and their facilities but i don't know if the benefits will be much in leeds..
I'm really confused..
If you're still learning English and are studying law, it might be wise to do the Masters first. I think a law PhD with English as your second language would be extremely difficult - law's hard enough to read for native speakers! It would only be another year and you could settle in to your new environment and practice writing in English before undertaking the PhD. And as for attending lectures as a PhD student - well yes, it's theoretically possible, but once the PhD gets underway people normally don't attend lectures unless they absolutely have to! Apart from the occasional seminar for social interaction and a free lunch...
I'm quite surprised somewhere like Warwick has given you an offer without having any English language law studies. I would say it will take at least a year to get used to legal English and acquaint yourself with international business law, and on that basis, Leeds may prove a more fruitful option.
hi sue.. thank you for your help.. what you said is exactly what my friends said to me: as soon you get start you phD you won't attend anything you have to. and I'm bit concerned about my English as well but some people said : after a few months in the first year you will handle it and at least you will know what you need in your area...
missspacey.. i'm surprise as well!! and this why i don't want to miss this chance which my not happen again ..
i have seen in this links that Warwick does new route but nothing in their website.. and not body answer my email yet..
i'm still confused:-(
thank you for your reply man.. i don't have any problems with my speaking... it would be enough for me if i write like i speak.
i would like to thank you all for your help.. i think I'm going to ask Warwick to give me a new route programme or a similar programme. otherwise i'm going to Leeds to study new route..
