phd application 2011

R

Is it too late to find a Phd to start this year?
I just graduated from a British uni in Software Engineering with a First, and thinking of doing a Phd. I would have to rely on studentship and stipend for living. Can I actually find funding and a suitable Phd at this time of the year?

P

Yes. it is still possible.

Most PhD are offered in spring and a bit later and then the interviewing and stuff is done, so people can start 1. October.

but there is a lot of PhDs offered that have either a variable starting date or they are just offered now. my girlfriend just applied for one 4 weeks ago or something and was offered an interview that will take place next week.

So have a look for some spots. And if you don't find anything/get anything calls for the PhDs starting in spring will start in autumn/winter ;)

Good luck ;)

Not really, you probably can't be a picky as you could in other times of the year.

As Podge mentioned, PhDs are coming back on here as their first choice candidate failed to make the grade. Just keep trying! And don't lose faith in yourself- I had 5 PhD (with stipend) interviews before I got a PhD offer!

Usually PhDs start Sept/Oct then January, but if you keep you eye out there are some that want immediate start!

Hi Rm950

PhD's are advertised throughout the year, but, as Elmo310 says, if you want more choice you'll need to look for places starting in 2012. Having said that new positions are being advertised all the time (or often readvertised at this time of year). You can see what software engineering PhD opportunities are available now on FindAPhD.

Are you a UK student? This will effect what funding is available to you.
