PhD Confusion

G

I am coming to the end of my biology BSc and I am interested in doing a PhD. My parents want me to do an MSc in forensic science as they can see a definite career for me but I would prefer to do a PhD. They believe that there are no career prospects after I have completed a PhD. They are beginning to convince me that that there are no careers other than academic ones or poorly paid research which I am not interested in. What are the potential career prospects when you have completed a PhD?

Have you talked to your university career service? They are (probably) in a better position to advise you - parents mean well but might not be giving you the correct advice. As for career prospects after PhD, well, if you want to work in academia or research (either academic or industry) it's pretty much essential. However, you say you are not interested in 'poorly paid research' but no one gets rich on a PhD bursary and it's extrememly hard (research!) work, so perhaps you have answered your own question! Good luck with whatever you decide (and Merry Christmas!)

go through jobs and see how much you earn in a job and what is asked from you. PhDs are not poorly paid!! you earn more if you have a PhD than without it. and most good jobs ask for it.
