PhD / DPhil interview

J

Hi

Interview for DPhil at Oxford is Tuesday. Wondering if anyone has any tips. In particular I read about people and their interviews being 'tricky' and that they were asked 'technical' questions, but they don't say what these were! So I've got:
- why do I want to do a phd?
- why is my project important?
- current experience so far?
- something about methodology?
- what can i contribute to department?
- talk about interviewers' / supervisors' research.

Any advice would be welcome!
Thanks

R

Hello, hopefully someone will come along with more specific advice, but you could try this link:

Scroll down to the bit that says 'What happens at a PhD interview?'

Perhaps they mean tricky in the same way my PhD interview was - albeit I my interview was at QMUL.

During my interview I was faced - well more barraged - with several "problems" within my proposal. By which I mean areas that I would need to carefully negotiate rather than massive gaps in my knowledge. I had anticipated this, and was well versed in how I would approach these issues -given you'll be facing an expert panel, the sheer number of questions and picking apart of your answers can be intimating.

I'd recommend sussing out the challenging elements of your proposal and knowing how you can defend/show you've considered your proposal from all areas.

Thanks this is useful!

Any other specifics people have would be great!
