Hi guys. I have been told on several occasions that there is less competition for PhD funding in Ireland compared to England or Scotland. I was just wondering if any body has any views or experience of this.

all depends on whether its north or south of ireland as funding is totally different?

If you're applying in the republic I don't think the IRCHSS (Irish Research Council for Humanities and Social Sciences) is much less competitive than the AHRC or ESRC - if you look at who sits on the IRCHSS board, alot of them are british anyway and so should be judging work at a standard level...

Bear in mind also the cost of living [eg housing] in Ireland. Scary stuff.
