I am a UK citizen looking to start a PhD in History in 2006.. Does anyone have any ideas on the likelihood of me finding a funded studentship in Canada? I have a first from Bristol university and strong referees. Any advice greatly appreciated, thanks.

Wht don't you try Oxford you will definately get it easily there with your results but Canada is also good Alberta/Torento/Dalhouise....

Thanks Dev... was at Oxford for a while so not sure if I want to put myself through that again ;) Anyone have any ideas about how easy it is to get funding as a Brit in Canada, and also is there a league table for research at canadian universities? Many thanks. Elham - start a new thread with your post, you'll get more responses!

You will have to sit for your GRE exam (General) and maybe the subject exam (better fi you do) I am not sure there is a legue table in canada but as far as I know Dalhouise is the best for sciences though Alberta is not far behind.

You will get a teaching assistanship to pay for your living where you will teach for a pay. Tuition is usually free, later on you may get a research grant so you can stop teaching. These are available to all irrespective of the country of origin

Lucia, there is one university guide you can use for Canadian universities http://www.macleans.ca/universities/article.jsp?content=20031106_133202_2948 As for funding, most PhD positions (at least in my area) are fully-funded, especially in Ontario and British Columbia ( I mean provinces). As I know there are some problems with funding in Quebec. In general the best universities are Toronto, Queens', McGill. But it all depends on your research area. Info about all unis you can get at its association http://www.aucc.ca/index_e.html

My advice would be: identify the programmes you are interested in (look at the professors you could be interested in working with - that is important!)and email their PhD offices asking what kind of funding they have avaliable at department and univesity level. If you have any other questions, please, ask. I spent there several years doing my Master's and working as a research assistant and I will be happy to help if I can.

Thank you so much for all this great info, especially Dev and Alan. I only just rechecked my post after a long vacation so apologies for not thanking until now. How well-respected is a Phd, in general terms, from Canada? How difficult is it to get a place? Many thanks again.
