PhD interview - presentations??

B

Hi!
I've just been shortlisted for an interview for PhD, which is great!, but they've told me that it will consist of a 'presentation section'. Does anyone know what this involves? Has anyone had to do something similar?
Thanks for your help!! :)

best to ask in advance.. just in case!

i've just asked and been told the I 'will prepare and present a talk at the interview.' They'll give me the details of the subject of the talk and length of presentation with the official invitation.
I've never heard of giving presentations at phd interviews! ahh!

When I was a final year undergrad, a housemate of mine applied for a PhD in her Department, and had to give a presentation to a few members of staff and post docs. However, it was helped by the fact that she knew a couple of the staff, and her presentation was merely a rehash of her dissertation viva, so it wasn't too bad for her. Presentations at interview seem rare, but I presume they're looking for someone who is good at speaking to a group. Good luck!

Yeah I guess it’ll be ok, as I’ll know the subject of the presentation and can prepare for it beforehand. Thanks!

I had to present at one of my interviews (biology). Had to talk of my research for 15 minutes and then the committee (three professors, none of them the potential supervisor) asked me questions for about 30 minutes. Some questions were a bit hard, but I think they did that just to test how far they could go. The important thing to remember is that nobody knows your work better than you do. (Provided of course, that you are to present one of your own projects, and not some random paper or something).

not sure if i'll be talking about my MSc project as the woman told me they'll give me the subject i have to talk on. Hmmmm...i'll just have to wait and see.

I had to do a presentation for my PhD interview. They asked me to prepare a 20 minutes talk about my proposal with slides, images etc. Basically, I had to present my proposal to pitch for the studentship.

I also gave a presentation. It was a presentation of my master thesis.
Good luck!

I had to give a presentation on a research article of my choice at one PhD interview.... pretty scary stuff! Once you get on with it though the time flies by, like most things in interviews. As long as you read plenty about the subject you're given i'm sure you'll be fine.

Good Luck!

Just found out that I have to prepare a presentation to a funding agency, for example the Medical Research Council (MRC), requesting support for a project of my choice. The presentation has to include background, relevance to medicine, aims, methods including how my research background supports this application, and how I will tackle any problems that arise. Its 7 min long.
Any ideas???
