PhD- what next????

G

I have a masters degree and in september I start my PhD in Immunology. I'm really looking forward to it but sometimes I worry that I'm over qualifying myself. A PhD is really uselful if you want to stay in academia. But I already know that I dont want to do that. I'd rather work in industry or something. Is it worth getting a PhD then?

Since you know what type of job you want, why not contact some companies you would like to work for and ask what they would prefer. If that is too forward, you can look for adverts for jobs you want and see what the base requirements are.

It might progress your career and give you the confidence you need in industry but whether a PhD is right for you is for you to decide! How interested are you in the topic and will you use it? You could be taking the funding (assuming you'll be funded) from someone who really wants to do research! it's a tough one! Good luck in whatever you decide.

Scientists in industry earn considerably more if they have PhDs than if they dont. Those without PhDs are unlikely to be promoted into the higher levels of the organisation, whether they want to stay at the bench or not. Go for a PhD and cultivate industrial links as much as possible. See if the project can be converted into a CASE award -collaborative with an industrial organisation.
