Physics In Warwick

G

I am an international student have don't know too much about UK Unis. I send CVs to physics in Warwick and the staff replied me one hour later. She asked me to go for an interview and urged me to submit ORS(overseas research studentship). It seems to be quite nice--while I am waiting for replies from Cambridge and ORS cannot be applied in more than one institutions.

May I ask how good is Warwick? They got good reputation in UK but not worldwide as it is very young (unlike Cam OX IC LSE & UCL). Even not as good as Shef, KCL, Nottingham and Birmingham in terms of research income. But nevertheless their physics got 5 in RAE. So I am hesitating what to do next, to find another in the premier league (internationally well known) or to stick to Warwick as Cambridge backup?
Many thanks for your adivces!

G

replied you an hour later? wow thats cool, if you think you will get into warwick, maybe you should apply for ORS there

G

Thanks imm, exactly one hour, hehe. I read your post-- you are int as well. I think as soon I got AD from Cam I may choose Cam to bid ORS. But i don't know the outcome and there is risk of course.

G

I don't know if research in warwich enjoy high reputation in your area, but they do enjoy good reputation in general, and it is diffucult to get the admission from them. So, congratulations! But obviously it is not as good as Cam and OX. So you can just tell warwick that you would like to delay your acceptance for a couple of weeks and you don't need to be too ashamed as this is normal, and the universities are used to such issues

G

I feel sorry for people who just want a PhD as a suffix for their name. They are interested in the Uni and not the subject.

G

To be realistic, uni reputation is an important factor in future career expectation, which students could never around. There are projects attracting me in many unis and there is always a compromise for a choice.

G

You are not being realistic. You are being naive. I am sorry to say this.
Good uni might get you an interview for a research position but its you who has to clear the interview and get the job done.

G

Thank you for your advice. I will be ready for the interview(hopefully).

If you want a career in research then the only thing that matters is that you work in a good lab, not in a good university. All the places you have mentioned have very good reputations. Any department with a 5 or 5* RAE rating will have a strong international reputation in their specific areas of research. What's important is that you pursue the research project that you are most interested in. If you continue in research anyone who is likely to employ you will know of the reputation of your research group.

If you wish to use your PhD as a gateway to other employment outside of research then you may be better off at a more famous university.
