Post Doctoral Research Opportunities in Australia

P

I am 2nd year PhD student in Carbon Capture and Storage in the UK. I am interested in a postdoc position in same field or allied area in Australia. I hope I can start looking for such opportunities when I am in my 3rd year – during the writing up stage of the program. What are the best avenues to explore in finding a postdoc position in Australia? I was told most postdoc positions over there have a duration of 3 years, and even renewable for another three years. Part of my target in the PhD program is to publish three papers before my viva voce. Because my area of research is a pretty emerging area, there are, I think, limited job/postdoc openings in the field. With a PhD from England, and three journal papers in my CV, what are my chances of getting a faculty positon in an Australian university? Needless to say, I am attending a biennial conference in Switzerland by the end of the year, and the conference brings people from all over the world who are into my area of research. Perhaps this could be a place where one can meet potential employers?

If you're talking permanent job and if Australia is in any way like the UK or US, then I'm guessing close to zero. You need to build up your research portfolio and experience before you can get a faculty position. If by faculty position you mean postdoc (this isn't a faculty position), then I would say you have a good chance if you get three publications. Definitely seek out contacts at the conference.
