Is it a good idea to cite your own published work in the thesis? It wouldnt be at length, but to show that some work has been published? Or is it better to just leave it out, and see if examiners look you up and find it?

Of course you can. Just don't "quote" the whole paper.
I had one page after the summary chapter of publication and conference list.
