qualitative quotes

S

hi everyone,
about qualitative quotes == are we allowed to edit them?
for example in my transcript --
"...as a chef to see such an authentic dish,"

is it ok for me to put in
""...as a chef seeing such an authentic dish,"

so I have made grammatical editions, is this allowed?
thanks

I know different types of qualitative analysis have different 'rules' about how detailed the transcript should be, but I personally wouldn't ever make corrections to a quote. If I felt I had to add something to clarify the quote, I would add it in square brackets, to make clear the difference between the participant's words and mine.

The sentence quoted does not necessarily need editing: insert a comma between 'chef' and 'two.' Give us the whole quote- as it stands it sounds like he could be saying 'as a chef, to see such an authentic dish [ruined peed me off]'- referring to himself in the impassive voice.

It depends on your analytical approach as well as the type of transcription you use. For example, Jeffersonian transcription requires a strict adherence to what is said rather than what is grammatically correct.

So the question to ask is how far will such a correction impact your analysis and make a decision based on that.
