I'm aware there are numerous threads on a revise and resubmit viva outcome, but I was wondering from those who go this - what did you have to do/change/add? Was it adding completely new chapters, revising one or more chapters in their current form or less than that? (for example: adding in paragraphs or expanding on many statements throughout).

I have a R&R verdict and am currently trying to work through my changes, (with little motivation atm), but every little helps I suppose. I got 12 months to make changes due to my long commute etc effectively ruling out any during the week work so have to submit by the 11 Dec.

I have got something to do in every chapter (my list of corrections/comments came through and it is 6 typed pages). I did a science PhD and have to add things like a standalone methods chapter in every results chapter, condense my intro and discussion, addition of new sections for clarity, addition of some figures and and removal of others and some needed tweaking for clarity. Some of it was changing the formatting somewhat to what the examiners prefer and correcting some typos. Lots of things to make my thesis flow better. My thesis is a bit jumbled (probably a reflection of where I was when writing it :s) and needs some re-structuring to make it clear why i was trying to do what i did and why.

I definitely have to hit the literature again :(, and I have to update my discussion with the new literature between my submission and re-submission.

I think I may be heading for a R&R and was feeling like it might be the end of the world - it nice to hear success stories :)

I have the same issue, got R&R in November 2014. Extremely discouraging, as my revisions are mainly in the literature and theoretical approach. I was told by the examiners I could have this done in 6 months, but to date, I have been slow in gaining confidence. I was told my empirical chapters are excellent and I do not need to do a viva again, however, I still feel as though the wind has been kicked out of me! anybody else feel this way - maybe it is a day-in day-out exhaustion.

I have to do quite a lot for my R n R. It involves revising every chapter and adding to the literature review. I can't get access to important books as I am now back in my home country, where books from the UK and the US can be very expensive. I am now relying on journal articles from my UK uni library.

Thankfully, there are certain parts in the thesis which can be re-used, so I just copy and paste the relevant sections.

I just managed to scrape 200 pounds for the writing up fees which could have been useful for getting myself a new laptop. I am now dependent on my spouse as I am still looking for a permanent job. Honestly, I have felt very close to giving up but I can't give up now for the sake of my kids. I need to be a good example to them.

I was given major corrections and can't see much difference between R&R and major corrections so will give you my story anyway.

I've been asked to add two new chapters to my thesis and also merge two of my theories into one (Foucault & Feminism if you're doing Sociology by any chance?!) and discuss this throughout the thesis as a whole, so basically slotting in more paragraphs where necessary.

Everyone's corrections are different and, with a positive attitude, you can plough through them more quickly than you think. However, there are some days/weeks...even months where you feel like you're just not going to get the PhD (how I feel at the moment). The success stories give you the will to carry on fighting though.

anz07, I replied to you in the other thread, but: merge Foucault and Feminism into one theory??? That is a ask that the best of us would despair at, mainly because these two things are pretty incommensurable :-D
