Ive a year to complete my MA in Business and Computing. Im studying this via work based learning. I dont know what to do next and what my options are.
What I really want to know is what are the different routes to obtaining and PhD. I really don’t want to give up my job. Ive spent ages building my career.
Does a PhD always involve being a researcher at a Uni? Or can it be done independently of a Uni? How long does it take and are there any resources on the net anyone can point me towards?
can I ask why you want to do a PhD? Its doubtful its going to help a career in Business and Computing. Make sure your motivations right. You can do this sort of research in industry and will find it more relevant.
Otherwise best suggestion is to look into CASE awards or some way that your company can sponsor you if that is what you really want. I know people who have done PhD's part time but it is difficult in such a fast moving field!
You cannot do a PhD without the involvement of a university. However a small number of opportunities do exist to do a PhD which is industrially based, but with academic (university) supervision.
