Salford University

G

Hey there,
I would like to know the credentials of University of Salford compared to other universities..I am planning to pursue PhD in Salford.
Cheers

It is the department that you should be concerned about, not the university. There are poor departments in 'good' universities and good departments in 'poor' universities. Have a look at the Research Assesment Exercise Rating of the department you are interested in.

G

I was an undergraduate at Salford University, and the department I was in had a 5* rating. It all depends on the department. I can safely say that I was in one of the best for work and also extras as they regularly had nights out as a department (I headed the organising commitee for 3 years!) If you need anything else, just ask me.

hey neil thanks for ur info...im thinking of pursuing phd in Built and Human Environment...HOw are the career service..how does the university stand in job market

G

Hi Kir. The career service is pretty good (I would say about average compared to most Universities, which is by no means a downfall!) In terms of job prospects, again it all depends on the department. It does have a good reputation as a research University and is getting a better reputation all the time. I'm no expert in the Built and Human Environment but if you go to their website that may answer some of your questions.

Is Salford univesity better than Huddersfield or not? I've read reviews about Salford that are quite bad, people have said it's rough and even if you have a first class degree you won't get a decent job because your from salford.

Is that true?

G

Neil and the FAP team make an important point in their posts, you should look at the rating for the department that you are interested in joining. Who told you about employers discriminating against Salford graduates? Sounds highly unlikely to me...!

hey i was told that living in salford in bit tricky? wat do u think abut that

Like any big city Manchester has good and bad areas to live in. Take advice from other students when you are looking for accomodation and you shouldn't have any problems. Manchester is a great place to be and much cheaper than London. Stop worrying.
