Just a quick one: Should footnotes be placed at the relevant section in a sentence or at the end of the sentence? e.g. In the case of X blah blah blah Should the footnote giving further detail on X be placed at "X" or at the end of "blah blah blah"? I'm all confused!!
Convention can vary. I used to do it after X but was told when I started my PhD that that is very wrong! So my footnotes now go after the end of the full-stop at the end of the sentence, so after "... blah blah blah."
Hi Bilbo Thank you for your reply! Now the job of checking over 80 footnotes over 270 pages - doh!!
I think you can also place a footnote after a semi-colon, useful if you want to refer to something very specific within a longer sentence.
