Some good wishes needed

S

Hi. After a long period of being mentally bullied by my supervisor I decided to stand up for myself and change my supervisory arrangement. The Head of the Research Institute supports my and today is the day when I'm going to make this huge step. I know my supervisor will get absolutely mad when he find out about that but I can't work with him any more. I hope some of you reading this post understand what I mean and will support me with a good word. As Roosevelt said: 'You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.' All the best to everyone!

Well done for taking this step and good luck with the change. Requesting a change in your supervisory arrangements can be very stressful but hopefully you will be much happier in the end.

Been there done that, but my complaint was not taken further. I had to deal with a covert narcissist. Now you may understand why I am struggling so bad to get anything. Just beware of the consequences and just beware that it may backfire on you and you then get commented on for being the bully!

I haven't been through this specific experience, but personal resilience is apparently one of the key qualities needed for a successful career in academia - so be resilient, forget it happened, and do your best to move on whatever the reaction may be from anyone. If things are really rotten, remind yourself that you will not always be there and things will get better!
