I'm trying to find PhD studentships in stem cell research in the US but I'm struggling, I've tried googling and don't really get anything. I've also been on a couple of the universities websites like California and New York to see if they have advertised anything but I didn't find anything there either. Is it not like the UK where they just advertise PhD studentships?

Hi, not sure about specific programs or how studentships are advertised BUT one idea is to look at journals in the area and identify those publishing papers to see where they are based.
