Can anybody recommend software (?) that slows down / automatically stops an audio recording to make it easier to transcribe it? I know this was mentioned in a recent thread, but I can't find it! :-)

I used 'transcription buddy'. You can download from http://www.download.com. Search 'transcription buddy' in there. After you download, it will give you a free 30 day trial. Uninstall it once the trial finishes and repeat the process afterwards to install again. I got the tips from this forum and found this very useful !

I finally invested in a pedal to help this week. A bit pricey but it makes it so much easier!

I've always used Audacity, works very well (and free) :-)

I'd second transcription buddy - go to the view menu, and in options there is an option to put in 'automatic pauses' which means the track loops (at the speed you set it) so you never have to press pause/play (if you get your timings right for the speaker's speed)

Thanks everybody! :-) I've transcribed the interview using Transcription Buddy, which worked very well. :-) What was really difficult though was that the sound quality was pretty bad. There were quite a few bits I couldn't understand. :-( There seems to be a problem with our phone - it works well most of the time, but sometimes it's really bad. Anyway, I think I've got the most important bits now! Of course, reading the transcript now I can see where I should have asked more questions or probed a bit deeper. And there are far too many 'ummms' and 'yeahs' from me. :$ I guess it's a learning process - onward and upward! :-)

from memory, transcription buddy has an option to have noise cancellation which may work, its quite similar to audacity I think in that it plays back the noise frequencies to cancel them out. Probably worth a try.

Automatic voice recognition software normally reduces the manual transcription needs. But Automatic voice recognition technology is not still matured to produce accurate transcription for non-American accents, or with people speaking quickly or multiple speakers audio files.  If you have more than one voice it is almost impossible to get a good transcript. Add to that any background noise or a weak recording and you can pretty much forget it.

So, after automatic transcription, you have to massage this transcription into the final form. Some of the massages are

Correct incorrectly transcribed words/phrases.
Correct punctuation/sentence breaks.
Define paragraph breaks.
