Hi everyone I'm planning to apply for PhD this year...and am wondering what my chances are. I graduated from a top Asian university but with a 3rd hon (I was suffering from depression and a drinking prob, but of cos, I was lazy as well, cudnt blame anyone), and then while I was working I did a part-time LLB, this time with a 2:2 (but close to 2:1). I'm now doing LLM at a top UK uni, currently completing my disso, but there's a very good chance that I will end up with a distinction, a pretty high one even.

I've always been a top student until I became depressed in college - I also have a pretty good work resume, as a political commentator/ writer I was already pretty well-known where I came from, published books, appeared on TV and talked at unis etc. I heard it would help in my application for a PhD but I'm not too sure. After all my academic CV isnt as pretty as I want it to be. I'm not too worried about a PhD offer but I'm worried about funding.

So I'd appreciate if you can gimme some advice on this...btw, I'm looking to do a PhD in politics/sociology field. I know I'm doing a LLM but I've always been a "politics" kinda girl. Thanks so much in advance!

It's a tough one - your results have been hit and miss (with reason, of course) and funders want someone who will definitely finish the PhD. If you have good experience that might help. All you can do is apply :).

Well, I got a 2:1 LLB with a dist LLM and I got a fully funded PhD in law. I suppose if the 3rd was a while ago that might be forgotten by now. It's the 2:2 which concerns me, makes it too easy to just reject. But try.
