what could I do now??

P

Hello,

This question may be a bit stupid and you may say to use common sense!however I am sure most of you guys would have gone through this process earlier(or is going thru). I am in the application process and have applied to a couple of unis. In one of the unis, a prof really helped me out to prepare a proposal that fits into the project he has been doing and asked me to make a formal application, which I have done now. I had good discussion of the topic all these days for the proposal, but now I am done with the proposal,we dont have anything to discuss. I feel that he may forget me if I dont keep in touch with him and I dont know what could be done to keep the conversation going!I am reading the stuff and have also asked a couple of off topic questions. I am afraid that by just sending him formal mails may put him off and may have effects on my application. I am pinning my hopes on the project. Please let me know what could be done now to keep the contact. What did you guys do(or doing)??

Cheers

S

do not pin all your hopes on this one project, start looking for others and just be patient on this one. keep your options open, as if you didn't get this project (and i hope you do get it) you will be in a slight mess and will be right back at the beginning again, whereas other applications will give you back-ups if you don't get this one now.

I started off wanting this one project very much, but to keep options open i applied to many others as well. as a result i got invited to the universities and spoke in detail about the projects. then i didn't get the first project i wanted, but that didn't matter as when i went to see the supervisor, the project seemed poor at best to be honest, and i'm happy it has worked out the way it has. and as a result of me looking for back-ups i found this one project that seemed interesting, in a fairly new area and gives really good prospects afterwards.

so look for back-ups in the mean time, you never know what you will find

hey,

I agree with Stu, keep your options open.
I didn't and I am right at the beginning again with hardly any funding options available for me now.

I was in a very good contact with a supervisor who recently rejected me, I didn't imagine they would not want me after all those emails and calls and the interview... but they did. I tryed to keep the contact by asking for reprints my uni does not subscribe or letting them know that something good siencewise happend (ie publication/award/whatever you didn't say at the interview)

Good luck

M

sorry, if you didn't have an interview try to think of something you didn't have the chance to put in your resume...

Definitely look for other options in other universities as well. You need to have backups incase this one falls through.

This is only a suggestion... what do you think of maybe arranging an informal visit to the lab to see their work and perhaps meet the supervisor in person?

P

Thank you for your replies. I am though very keen on the project, I have kept my options open and have also applied for other universities. I havent heard from any yet.

I am sorry Mellory, that you could not get thru the interview n stuff.

I was curious to know how you guys maintained the contact with the potential supervisor without being pushy about the place in the project.
