I graduated 2 years ago and want to start a phd starting next october, when should i start applying etc?

ASAP!!! The earlier the better.

Many institutions (eg most MRC centres) have closing dates in early-mid January. Don't dispair if you miss these as other opportunities come up throughout the year, but the earlier you start applying, the more choice you'll have.
