Worried Graduate Teaching Assistant

G

hello. does anyone have advice on how i can be well prepared for my first tutorial. its the first time am teaching and i just finished my undergrad. are they going to take me seriously? secondly, an assesor will be in the room during one of my tutorials. what should i do to survive it?

Appear confident ! It can seem a scary thing, all those faces looking at you, but if you prepare you'll be okay. Look at the questions you'll be expected to go over, practise on a friend beforehand to get a feel for explaning things to others, and if you're unsure of something don't try and bullshit. Say you don't know but you'll find out and either email them or tell them next time. Let us know how it goes !

Dress well to entice the young ladies or lads?

I was dreading the teaching I had to do (in the second year of my PhD), but it was alright. Most of the students are really nice, they didn't even laugh when I kept falling over the same step in their lecture theatre week after week... There was just one bad day when the students knew what they were talking about and I didn't. Prepare the material well - you have the huge advantage of having seen whatever you're teaching before them!
