Personally I always write a plan when I'm trying to talk about a specific section of the literature, which is usually...
1) why am I looking at the literature
2) what does this literature say (descriptive) - but also critically evaluating any singular studies e.g. "although this study was carried out on people who wear pointy hats, so will not generalise to people wearing top hats"
3) criticise the literature - what are the key gaps in general that haven't been covered.
