I am currently applying for a PhD and have reached the stage where I have submitted my preliminary proposal and have letters of support from my prospective supervisors who have agreed to supervise me. All that is left is waiting to hear the outcome from the postgraduate committee. I was wondering what others experiences have been at this stage? Is it now a matter of a formality? What are the chances of rejection at this stage? The topic is an extension on an existing project within the department, and my background and skill set are aligned.

A very important factor is funding. Have you already secured funding? Will the committee decide in case of acceptance to award funding? If funding is secured, more likely it is formalities. If not, there is still a long way to go.

Totally agree with Eng. If you need funding, it becomes a competitive process - in that a dozen or so people may be applying for say two studentships. All with well written proposals and supervisor support etc.

It is already a huge achievement to have put the application together and got to this stage. From what you've said, it sounds like you have a very good case and so you should make it through to the next round (possibly interview?)
