I am looking into applying for a PhD in zoology at cambridge. The PhD project I am interested in is an already funded project (at UK/EU rate) which is currently being advertised on the cambridge website. Some of my friends have said that there is no need to contact the potential supervisors since the PhD is already funded and being advertised publicly. But since I am an international applicant and am also looking into applying for other PhD scholarships provided by cambridge uni (e.g. Cambridge trust, Gates cambridge) to cover the difference between international and domestic tuition fee, should I contact the potential supervisors of this project to make them aware of my situation?

P.S. One of the co-supervisors of this PhD project is actually a co-author of a paper I am currently writing, which I will be the lead author for this paper. However so far I haven't had the chance to speak with him whatsoever.. but he does know I exist..
