Hi, I would like to share my almost two years of PhD experience and would appreciate feedback/advice on the what follow next. My part of thesis was to design a diagnostic for a institute located in another Central European country which had a very young and inexperienced team. I was immediately assigned a subject expert who would advice me on how to design the whole diagnostic and was located in a different country which meant frequent skype calls. Soon my skype meetings resulted into some tasks leading to reports, the review of reports sort of gave me clue of what my future was. I started getting very bad and humiliating comments from my local supervisor at the institute while my subject expert gave a very balanced and professional comments. I approached my professor from my home university to change my subject or place of work but was adviced that it would lead to cancellation of everything as this is all he could do for me. So I continued with design part and with every report I sent more humiliating comments came in. Almost after a year major purchase decision was made and I felt a relief as we prepared to send a article to conference. However, I was warned by some colleagues that my local supervisor is a opportunist and racist guy and will kick me out once he gets all design inputs from me. I still continued to work keeping in mind the advice of people, after return from a student conference things suddenly changed as he gave me a probation period of six months. Soon I started learning more about this man and I started getting humiliating emails commenting on my work marked to my juniors as well. Now my focus was to only do tasks which would please him. He continued to encourage my by saying he can see progress etc. one day I got a mail from my professor that my supervisor has decided not to supervise my thesis and situation entered into a PhD-stall. Meanwhile my supervisor continued to push me to finalise optics design which I did to survive. Later he arranged a presentation of my work of last a year and8months and grilled me rigorously in front of other people of institute. People did not like his attitude towards and sympathised with me. They even said that I was on rite track but with wrong person. Recently I was told that I am not capable of ever getting a phd and that I should quit as I have not contributed anything.
Now with all design inputs he is all set to claim that he designed the whole system.
I feel exploited and helpless as now I am asked to simply pack my bags and leave, it has questioned my faith in scientific community.
I have lost interest in science and no longer have courage to do any research with this experience.
Good bye science.
