hmmmm interesting. thank you for this Bewildered. I thought that the schemes are the same every year and only the amount of money -and consequently number of scholarships- changes.
I was thinking to go for it idependently with the support of my supervisor rather than for the quota awards that are already allocated to the universities (perhaps both if I am allowed to, which I doubt).
I will try to find the right contact for this as you suggest and talk to my sup about it. Luckily he is extremely supportive and also very high in the hierarchy of the university which might help.
xx
Hello all :)
I need you valuable advice and opinion one more time. I am thinking of applying for ESRC Funding for next year (which will be my second year of the PhD). Does anyone know if this is possible or if ESRC only has the +3 studentships available? I have tried to find out online and I get the impression that anyone can apply unless they are in their final year.
I have never tried to get ESRC funding before as I am EU and it could only cover my fees which are already covered by my University. However the forthcoming September I will complete 3 years of staying in UK which allows me to apply.
Any ideas?
Hope you are all progressing well. 8-)
I have just started my PhD and I am trying to figure out how long does it normally take to complete it.
My broader area is marketing-management and the length of my PhD is supposed to be 3 years. I have to take the MRes modules in my first year but on a casual basis. This means that I have to audit most of them but not actually take exams, apart from 2 compalsory modules.
Just to clear things out, this is not a 1+3 year programme. My sup. argued that I should be able to finish in 3 but need to start readings immediately and work on them while auditing the courses on the first year. On the other hand, most PhDs in the department seem to take 4 full years (most of them) to complete it.
Please share your experiences (especially if your area is business)
an excited fresher :-)
Hi Jojo, I think the best think to do is to accept the request and then only allow him/her to have very limited access to your profile. You can change security settings to affect only your supervisor and keep you photos/wall/status updates to yourself.....That way you are being polite but keeping your privacy at the same time. had the same problem with my boss few months ago!!
hmmmm... that is all very interesting! i guess it will all come down to how lucky I am and whether there will be a position available.
One of my supervisors is new to the University, perhaps he will be in need of an assistant?
I know that I can always look for a job outside Uni but it would be best if I could be involved with academia a bit more
The PhD administrator said I may be able to get something and that I am allowed to work up to 20 hours per week, which sounds ok considering the workload...
anyway, will go for a visit to the university and will find out soon!
thank you all!
p.s. i have been reading the forum for the past few months, it is so good to finally be part of this
Hello everyone! this is my very first post :)
I am starting my PhD in September (so excited and scared at the same time) and luckily got a scholarship for my tuition fees but nothing for my living expenses.
I am now trying to approach my 2 supervisor to enquire about any opportunities there might be available for me to work part time as their assistant...
I am just wondering if this is a formal procedure usually, which would mean I have to formally submit an application for a position or whether it is common that supervisors give some paid work to their students?
Also, from previous posts it seems like students are expected to do assistant work for their professors without being paid.... which leaves me a bit hopeless!
and one last thing - anyone knows the hourly rates for such a job (in a British university)?
Thank you for your help! I am delighted to finally be part of this community!
By the way my PhD is in Management
