chalk talk

Quote From satchi:
hi cevikatmaca, chalk talk is like a spontaneous presentation. It enables the interviewers to see your depth of knowledge and your proficiency at presenting, showing, explaining as well as answering, for example, you could get a question mid-way--and then if you are able to steer back the presentation to where you were (your focus).

Think of it this way--you are making cupcakes, but this time you're doing it by hand instead of using an electric mixer.

To prepare for it, do the same for powerpoint, except you need to explain in on the blackboard. Plan step-by-step. Ask the committee if you can have a few minutes before the interview to prepare your blackboard. For example, if you are explaining something on a graph, you'll need to at least have that graph drawn out first (to save time). That way, you draw your graph before you explain, then when you come to it, you just use your chalk and dot/line/circle the blackboard as you explain it. It's quite fun, actually.

Make sure when you plan, you have in mind the START, and the END ready. Of course the result and discussion part is the most fun. but you need to end it as well. People have started and not ended because they got distracted, and time's up.

Don't worry about it. Since you are already familiar with your previous work, just relax, let yourself go and enjoy it!

Thank you very much for the detailed information. I really appreciate it so much. :)

chalk talk

Hello;

I was offered for a PhD interview by a graduate school. Selection committee wants me to present my previous work as a "chalk talk" without doing a Powerpoint presentation. I need to present it by drawing on a blackboard. Currently I have no idea how to manage it! Is there anyone else who experienced this kind of interview before? How should I plan it? If I can get some advice I really will appreciate it.

Unfortunately there isn't phone number of the secretary or someone else and I guess I do not want to call Professor directly.I am applying from abroad and It would be an interview via Skype.I think I may try to reach by mail again tomorrow. But it is really weird and annoying, they could say "it is too late" at least.

Hello;

Actually I know it is not a meaningful question to ask because no one can ever know what a stranger person is thinking but I need some advice anyway.

I had an e-mail that offers me an interview during this week. They sent it to me on last Tuesday -just two days ago- but unfortunately I did not have time to check my mails yesterday so I realized it in the evening of Wednesday lately. I sent an e-mail which asks for an interview on next Monday or tomorrow. I did not explain that I could not see their message. I am still waiting for an answer. If I did not get a feedback until tomorrow would I be eliminated by them because I did not reply as soon as possible.?

I know it is not possible to say something certainly and I need to wait but it is really annoying. I just wonder if there is anyone else who experienced something like this before and Should I write back them tomorrow again?

No one will speak in English.

.. Now, it isn't as if two Germans are having a conversation and then I arrive at the table and expect them to switch language. No, they have the courtesy to invite me to lunch, I gratefully accept and then have to sit at the lunch table listening to them laugh and chat away in German. This has been going on for 3 months...

Hello

I stayed in Germany for an internship during three months and I experienced this exact situation over and over again. I can understand your feelings. It makes you feel like a ghost and you feel isolated. But this is not something personal.I guess It is almost like this in everywhere around Germany. It takes a little bit more time to contact people and they usually prefer to socialize with other German students. I am not sure if it is a good idea to talk to Proffesor about them or how they are mature to discuss this kind of behavior.

Maybe you can try to start conversations or you can talk to other foreigner students in your group firstly. How did they deal with it?It is getting better day by day but actually it depends on the personalities and attitudes of those people. If they want to stick their language in social life, they will do it.

After Interview - Should I ask for a final decision?

Quote From Smoobles:
If they said you would hear back in January then I would definitely wait a bit longer, it is only the 10th of Jan now! Most universities only started back this week, so they probably haven't even got round to thinking about making a decision yet. I know it's difficult when you're anxiously waiting to find out, but I wouldn't contact them until Feb.

Thank you for advice. Unfortunately they wrote back a few days ago and as I thought and felt it was negative. Now I need to start over again.

After Interview - Should I ask for a final decision?
C

Hello;

I am new here.:)

I have been applied for PhD positions and I was interviewed for one of them in December. During the interview they informed that they would have a final decision and write me back in January. Anyway they haven't sent an answer yet. I wonder if I should write them and ask for their decision? Or It would be a bad thing? I was thinking that it could take much more time because of holiday season, but now I am thinking that I won't be offered for the position and they aren't interested in me. Also there is no sound -bad or good- from the other groups I applied for. I don't know if I am being so pessimistic but It seems like they forget me and they don't care about my application.
