Hi forum
I have recently left my job as a consultant ( v happy about it it was hell) Got another job in the energy industry with regular working hrs and a decent wage. I am using this opportunity to undertake my PhD part time. I would like to go back to Strathclyde which is where I did my undergrad and loved it. I know the marketing department there is really good.
I was wondering if I could get some advise, is there anyone who has done a PhD part time and how did they find it. Also does anyone know about the timings of start dates? is it all year round.
Also can anyone point me in the direction of ideas for topics?
Finally does anyone know any websites of the career benifits to undertaking a Phd and the doors it opens for you?
Ta!!
Hi Rick,
Yeah the consultant work I was doign paid really well but would have left no time for a phd at all, it didnt even leave time for a general life. The new job is 9-5 , how are you finding doing that and ur phd?? is it difficult ? is it possible to manage ur social life and work and ur phd? I have always wanted to become a uni lecturer thought it was about time I did something about it.
Hi All,
Hope everyone is doing well. I am in desperate need of some advice. I have been with ym consulting firm for under a year now. It sucks really rubbish working hrs and horrendous managers. I have been offered voluntery redundancy so I am running out the door. Now I have been offered another job but I have always wanted to become a university lecturer, my plan was to work for a couple of years then go back to uni.
I really like academia and was planing on pursuing this in marketing which is what I did at uni and loved.
I am a bit torn I would like to take the other job as it is a good industry , energy and a nice little balance. But I would like to do my PHD. I was thinking part time, I would appreciate any advice on how people have foudn this? for example if in a year or so I decide to pursue it full time can you change? How easy is it to undertake a phd on a part time basis with a full time job.
Hi all
Recently been thinking about shifting my career from consulting to academia. I would really like the idea of lecturing. I have been searching the net trying to find info on day to day life of lecturers the pros and cons of it as a career choice. I know it can be highly dependent on which university and subject you teach but does anyone have any insight into how much you could earn as a marketing lecturer in a university???
Oppotunities to work abroad for example if you have completed your phd in the uk can u apply for US vacancies??

Apologies if this is a silly question. I am thinking of pursuing a career in lecturing and would like to undertake a PhD. Firstly would anyone be able to point me in the direction of any website that provide a comprehensive insight into academia as a career choice?
Also to answer the question is a masters required
Hi All
This is my first post and I was wondering if anyone could help. I am 24 year old female. I graduated from uni in 2005 and have been working since. Currently working for a consulting firm ( which I hate!!!)
I have always wanted to go back to uni to study , I would quite like to become a lecturer. I did think abt this career path a while ago but I put in on hold to get some work experience. I understand it is a big choice .
I have been searching the web for info on life doing a phd, lecturing, salary etc but cant seem to find much. If anyone could provide me with any advice that would be great. My plan is to undertake a PHD in business and marketing.
I have had limited experience but in my current and previous job I have had the oppotunity to host workshops and lectures and I really enjoy it.
Anyone have any opinions about my situation positive or negative would be greatly appreciated !!!!
Hi there
Ive posted a few things on this forum and got some great feedback. One thing that puzzles me. I am looking to possibly go into a career in lecturing hence having to undertake a PhD. I quite enjoy the aspects of teaching and running tutorships and supervising students on dissertations and so forth. However a few people have to said to me that a career in lecturing is 80% research and 20% teaching.
Is that true?????
I would love to undertake research into my subject but I also want to teach .
Please help!
Hi there
I am looking to go into a career in lecturing. I wish to undertake my PhD in the discipline of marketing , loved the subjec tin uni and would love to teach it.
Just wanted to get an insight into the life of a phd student if anyone is doing marketing how are you finding it? ever think of doing something else instead! thanks
come on venturin12. Ok I am just at the stages of thinking of going into a PHd as I love the idea of teaching aswell as seeing my name on a publication but your post is soo depressing!
no social life threat of divorce???? I am positive there are moments in every PhD students life where they think shouldnt have done this but I really dnt think it can be that bad ...........is it?
I was pretty convinced I would like to go into a Phd and then into lecturing after spending two years in industry but you guys are sort of putting me off
Can someone please give me an honest opinion maybe someone who has finished their phd and is now working if they had their time again would they do it ??
Howdy
Yeah I thought the holiday thing was just a myth!lol
I know I just need to get out of the situation I am in. There is vey little work and the lack of interaction with people is really getting to me ! Its actually having a determental affect on my health. I sued to be such a happy person but now I find myself getting more and more depressed!
Hi
I do really enjoy marketing and would very much like to undertake more research. I also like the idea of seeing my name on a published document. As for the interaction bit someone told me that there is no interaction and ur just behind a computer on your own all the time is that true? Also what about quality of like. As a lecturer do you get the same holidays as the pupils? Also what is the earning capacity of lecturers ?
Although I enjoy the research aspect I think I would be more drawn to the teaching side
Hi Fluffymonster
When I was in uni I really did toy with the idea of lecturing. I enjoy presentations and public speaking doesnt bother me. I really enjoyed the subject of marketing. What appeals to me about lecturing and the life of an academic is the level of interaction you have with people. Prob not during the actual PhD stage but afterwards. I am currently working at a desk job and I really dnt like it ! No interaction with anyone and I dnt enjoy what I do. I am quite an outgoing person and I feel as though im being wasted where I am. I want to know though after you do your PhD what are the job prospects like? opportunites to work abroad? holidays?.
