well done to you - mr hyde, hjscotland and bobnic

mrhyde - as a panel 3 reject (grade 3), i'd be really interested to know what your avg grade for your MA is/or to date if you are still doing it. Also, what is your study about?

if your still around that is
hang in there stressed and everyone else who is waiting...

no-one seems to have news yet then. Stressed - your project sounds not only interesting but also a real intervention in your field - here's hoping for you...

note that I said "we" & "future self". I think I might have convinced myself that it's not over until I have tried again at least one more time. Thanks guys, cos it's so encouraging to hear everyone's passion and determination - its rather galvanises the despondent spirit.

Just catching up with numerous posts. stressed - I think your topic sounds great and we all seem to have connections, which is cool... presumably we are both very familiar with local authority record offices anyway.

wanwan - heidegger - phenomenology - love it, and sympethise completely. Everytime I try and explain that I am interested in said Lady Vyvyan's affective experiences of water (Heidegger&Bachelard), not who she ate cucumber sandwiches with, most people smile politely and edge away slowly.

Anyway, (and no offence to anyone related to a medical dr) but I thought we (or our future selves at any rate) were the proper drs.
Good luck today everyone

hi wanwan - nothing philosphy related as it happens, sorry. My diss is for an MA in English, but I am drawing heavily on Heidegger's work on Holderlin (rivers) and technology to look at a fairly unknown C20 writer of gardens and travel, Lady Clara Vyvyan - rivers pop up lots. I just like the philosphical angle, and often wish I had opted for that instead of English Lit.

As for my job - I manage and deliver outreach and learning from cradle to grave at the County Archive here in Cornwall. I get to do lots of fast and dirty research for my projects, but it isn't quite the same. My workmates are a brainy bunch though - it helps.

I hope postie brings some joy for somebody tomorrow...

thanks guys for your support - maybe I'll see how I feel next year, but my job is quite demanding in terms of creative thinking (well at least I think so) and is about to expand, so I just don't know if I have headspace for both. Some of you have fantastic stamina with all this

Anyway - words heeded and back to Heidegger with avengeance - I can at least acquit myself in my dissertation - you are right.

Am slow typist - thanks for the support too, Stressed.

Thanks mskoncept. I know I'm not daft or owt, but this was my only route in and after the struggle of working fulltime while completing my MA fulltime, I know I can't do that for another 3 years. Will be raising a glass or two to us all later... cheers

absolutely - i think the waiting is the worst bit. I guess academia is just not for me - or to be more precise, I'm not for it. It does take the pressure off having to produce a brilliant MA dissertation at least. I think a big consolatory cake is in order later today.

well it arrived, and I didn't get it... but at least the agony of waiting is over. Back to the world of archive learning after all. Not sure how I feel about it yet...sure it will kick in later though. This is going to make finishing my dissertation harder, but must press on...

I was panel 3 PhD app and got a grade 3. Letter said 3300 apps and about 30% successful this year. Good luck to everyone else. Still smiling

yes - fab news mskoncept . Good to hear about a success

Stressed - have promised a drum kit to smallest son when finished my 20k words... noisy, but bribery is the only way, I find. Have perfect view of front garden path and hence postman, from desk, hmm...no wonder have only written 5k so far.

New to the AHRC game and didn't have myself down as a postie stalker, but... Even my birthday cards last weekend were a disappointment as they were not the envelope that would at least put me out of my misery. Finishing MA with Exeter, panel 3 - can't afford to give up job to carry on with PhD (3 sprogs and mortgage) but at least I enjoy my job - really tough for those who don't even know where they will be living etc.

I think it would be easier to become an astronaut than an academic, but what can you do..?
