break from PhD?

Hi,

I'm doing a science PhD in the UK and I'm fully funded (Research Council). Does anyone know if it's possible to take a break of a few months halfway through the PhD? I was thinking of doing an internship... But the questions are: What happens to the funding, are universities strictly against it, does it make sense at all?

Hope someone out there is better informed than me... :S
