I've just completed my MSc and been approached by my tutor to consider a PhD. It's something I have always wanted to do, but was kind of surprised and flattered that I have been asked to consider it.

My dissertation was related to 16th Century planning history, which i really enjoyed, and know that if I did a PhD the historical element would be what interested me. I'm just wondering if there would be any benefit to studying this, when current issues are planning energy provision etc.

Any advice would be fantastic. I would love to end up in academia, I'm just not sure how realistic it is.
